                                                                                                                        April 1999

Dear Royal Rosarian,

It gives me great pleasure to present to you the Royal Rosarian Foundation Board of Director’s Strategic Plan 2000. This plan represents the vision and work of dozens of Rosarians over the past years. Historically, the Rosarian Memorial Fund has been a repository for gifts and contributions, made in loving memory of departed Rosarians by families and friends. Because of a lack of specific goals, funds were deposited in an account and left to accrue interest. Projects funded by withdrawals from the old memorial fund were few and frugal.

With the advent of year 2000, we Rosarians celebrated our 88th anniversary as Portland’s official ambassadors and as solid supporters and participants of the Rose Festival, 1998-99 was selected by both leadership and membership as a point in time of reassessment and goal setting for the future. Last year, the Royal Rosarian Foundation was formed and officially granted tax exempt status. This action was the result of our current reassessment process.  As Rosarians we are all especially indebted to Board Past President, Joe Rutten, for his leadership and hard work during the IRS application process.

Few organizations pause to take a bold look at the challenges of their future and even fewer commit to making the necessary changes to insure their continued relevance and commitment to their community. I am pleased that so much of this strategic plan focuses on positioning the Royal Rosarian Foundation for new possibilities that lie ahead. This plan will serve as our guide, ensuring that we Rosarians continue to focus our energies on meeting the human needs of our organization, our city and our global community.

Sincerely,
Tom Sagerser, President
Royal Rosarian Foundation

Our Foundation Mission

The Purpose of the Royal Rosarian Foundation is to generate and disburse funding for Royal Rosarian local and world community projects that satisfy human, intellectual, physical, social and emotional needs.

Operating Principles:

  1. The mission will guide all Foundation activities.
  2. The Royal Rosarian Membership is our most valuable resource.
  3. The Royal Rosarian traditions are essential components of the Royal Rosarian Foundation.
  4. The Foundation will operate with a balanced budget.
  5. The Foundation will act to sustain our organization today and its mission for tomorrow.
  6. The Foundation will assess and improve the programs through which it serves local and world communities.
  7. In whatever the Foundation chooses to do, we will excel.

Fundamental Strategic Imperatives:

  1. The Royal Rosarian Foundation will focus on good citizenship realizing that a larger world exists beyond our organization.
  2. The Foundation Board will seek new members who will support the organizational purposes set forth in our mission statement.
  3. The most important work of this governing Board is to create and re-create the reason for the Foundation’s existence. This task is a perpetual obligation, deserving of the majority of this Board’s time and energy.
  4. The only justifiable reason for the Board’s existence is the production of worthwhile results. Worthwhile results must always equate to the satisfaction of human needs.
  5. This Board will demonstrate, support and embrace the financial, intellectual, emotional and spiritual values of the Royal Rosarians.

Finance and Development:

To ensure the long term financial health of the Royal Rosarian Foundation and to provide the resources that will enable the fulfillment of our mission and objectives, the Board will:

  1. Develop a detailed list of Foundation projects and individual funding benchmarks on behalf of the Rosarian membership.
  2. Determine the funding priority among competing projects.
  3. Create a development plan of the approved projects with specific goals for fund raising.

Outcome Assessment and Continuous Improvement

The Board will create and monitor a system for an annual outcomes assessment of foundation actions and results. Documentation of this assessment will be published to the membership at the Royal Rosarian Foundations annual meeting.

The annual report shall include:

  1. A status report for each “approved” Board project with:
    1. Total of Funds budgeted
    2. Funds expended “to date”
    3. Project completion date
  2. A financial report of the current assets and liabilities of the Foundation.
  3. Public recognition of and specific individual “thank you” for
    1. Rosarian member suggestions for Foundation project(s) submitted to the Board
    2. Encouragement for members to submit future project suggestions to the Board
